Regional wildife projects in Colorado funded by special licenses

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) and eight non-profit wildlife conservation organizations have selected more than $480,000 in wildlife projects that will be funded this year with proceeds from the sale of special auction and raffle hunting licenses in Colorado.

Applications available for youth, women’s hunts in Northwest Colorado

The Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach and Women Afield programs are pleased to announce that applications are available for several big game and small game hunts in northwestern Colorado. The hunts are open to young people (age 12-17) or women who are interested in learning how to hunt.

One day in school, I was fascinated by the different species of wild sheep, and the white variety caught my eye. These beautiful animals intrigued me like no other animal. My dream was to go on a hunt for a trophy Dall’s Sheep some day.

Kelley scores big with Himalayan Tahr

John and Connie Kelley of Meeker, Colo., traveled to New Zealand for a hunting excursion in July, 2007. While there, they hunted red stag, Fallow deer and free-ranging Chamois and Himalayan Tahr.

Elk Foundation Announces Colorado Conservation Grants

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, an international conservation group focused on habitat protection and enhancement, has announced its 2008 first-round project grants for Colorado.

Grants will affect Clear Creek, Dolores, Grand, Jackson, Las Animas, Mesa, Montrose, Park and Rio Blanco counties. An additional project has statewide interest.

What’s the future of hunting, fishing in Colorado?

Despite the declining interest in hunting across the region, the Fish & Wildlife Service says Colorado still attracts the most hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers.

According to the survey, 677,000 people fished and 265,000 people hunted in Colorado in 2006. More than half of Colorado hunters are from out of state.
