Colorado asking for hunters’ opinions on future regulations of big game seasons

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is requesting public comment and feedback to help determine the 5-year Big Game Season Structure for deer, elk, pronghorn, bear and moose.

Wildlife commission to vote on waterfowl, small game seasons at Durango on Thursday

The Colorado Wildlife Commission will meet Thursday at the Double Tree Hotel, 501 Camino Drive in Durango for its regular July meeting. The meeting will begin at 8:30 am and adjourn at 3:30 pm.

Small game and furbearer regulations and season dates will be in front of the Commission for final adoption along with migratory bird regulations and season dates. These regulations will include the recent proposals to improve waterfowl hunting on the South Platte River.

Tips for elk hunting

Over the past century we have witnessed a remarkable wildlife turnaround. When the 20th century was young, it was estimated there were fewer than 50,000 elk left in the U.S. Today the estimated population exceeds 800,000 elk. Hunting is allowed over much of elk country and some states have surplus populations.

Colorado fishing report for July 1

With the Fourth of July weekend at hand, for Colorado fishermen the action may or may not be hot as a firecracker.
An escape to the mountains, both to escape the summer heat and find the best fishing prospects seems in order. Mountain lakes and reservoirs continue to offer good fishing, both for recently stocked trout and fish that have been in the water for some time. Northern pike are becoming active in some mid-elevation reservoirs, and fishing for kokanee salmon remains good at Blue Mesa Reservoir, among others.

Applications available for youth, women’s hunts in Northwest Colorado

The Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach and Women Afield programs are pleased to announce that applications are available for several big game and small game hunts in northwestern Colorado. The hunts are open to young people (age 12-17) or women who are interested in learning how to hunt.
